How to use Community Walk in various disciplines:

Give success criteria for students per project by using a rubric of what elements should be included in the map.
Do collaborative group work with assigned roles, such as:
- Map Designer: All information filtered to and through this person
- Researchers:
  • Media – Video and photos
  • Information – Facts
Present map to class.

Language Arts
The teacher creates a map of certain location in relationship to the setting of a narrative or time period (Harlem Renaissance, for example). Students work in groups to research aspects of the setting and/or culture, such as photos of buildings/artwork and videos of music of the time period to add to the map. The resulting project would incorporate these elements into the map so students can take a community walk through the time period of the narrative.

Science
Map the entire San Andreas Fault. Do research online to add information on your map. Be creative as possible to add photos and videos. For example students could include a video of a particular earthquake in San Francisco. Determine the mileage of the fault. Place markers of cities such as San Francisco and Santa Barbara. Place markers for certain geographical features, the Banning fault near Cabazon in San Gorgonio Pass.

Social Studies/History
Map the path of the Underground Railroad. Include photos of hiding places. Place markers at actual hiding places, including links to websites related to these places or the people who managed them.

Math
